Anura Karunathilaka says the government will not request another electricity tariff increase from the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka before September.
The Minister made the statement in Parliament of Sri Lanka today (21) while responding to a question raised by Ravi Karunanayake during the oral questions session.
Addressing concerns regarding the recent appreciation of the United States Dollar and the impact of the Middle East crisis on energy-related costs, Minister Karunathilaka stated that the latest electricity tariff revision would mainly affect consumers using more than 180 electricity units per month.
He further noted that the government had provided a subsidy worth Rs. 15 billion to reduce the burden on other categories of electricity consumers.
According to the Minister, the present administration currently has no intention of seeking approval from the PUCSL for another tariff increase before September.
The statement comes amid growing public concern over rising living costs, currency depreciation, and increasing global fuel prices linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
