The Ministry of Health and Mass Media Sri Lanka says steps have been taken to install 16 modern cardiac catheterization laboratory machines (Cath Labs) in major government hospitals across Sri Lanka by 2026.
The total estimated investment for the project is Rs. 3,103 million.
Under the programme, Cath Lab machines are scheduled to be installed at:
- National Hospital of Sri Lanka
- Teaching Hospital Kandy
- Teaching Hospital Karapitiya
- Teaching Hospital Batticaloa
- Teaching Hospital Ratnapura
- Teaching Hospital Badulla
- Teaching Hospital Jaffna
- Teaching Hospital Kalubowila
- Teaching Hospital Anuradhapura
- Teaching Hospital Kurunegala
- District General Hospital Trincomalee
The project is being funded through a combination of:
- Rs. 715 million from the Ministry of Health
- Rs. 1,188 million under the Asian Development Bank Health Systems Improvement Project
- Rs. 1,200 million in assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency
Officials stated that once the 16 new machines are installed, the total number of Cath Lab machines available in government hospitals will rise to 26.
Authorities expect the expansion to significantly increase the country’s capacity to provide critical cardiac procedures such as:
- Angiograms
- Stent insertions
- Pacemaker implantations
The Ministry noted that these services are expected to more than double compared to current treatment capacity.
