The Department of Meteorology has forecast showers or thundershowers at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Southern, and Uva provinces, as well as in the Matale and Nuwara-Eliya districts today (28).
Additionally, showers or thundershowers will occur in several other areas during the afternoon or night.
The department warns of heavy rainfall exceeding 100mm in parts of Uva province and the Batticaloa, Ampara, Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, Polonnaruwa, and Hambantota districts. Meanwhile, fairly heavy showers above 75mm are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and the Galle and Matara districts.
Strong winds of 30-40 kmph are also anticipated over the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, and North-Western provinces, as well as in Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, and Hambantota districts.
The public is advised to take precautions against localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers to minimize potential damage.
