IMF Accused of Double Standards Toward Sri Lanka – Ravi Karunanayake

Former UNP Deputy Leader and MP Ravi Karunanayake has alleged that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is applying double standards in its dealings with Sri Lanka, especially as the country struggles to recover from bankruptcy.

Speaking to the media, Karunanayake criticized the recent imposition of import taxes by the United States under the Trump administration, stating that such policies are anti-globalization and further impoverish developing nations.

“These decisions are not just political moves by one individual. They reflect broader policies that hurt countries like ours,” he said.

The MP emphasized that Sri Lanka must now highlight the potential of its export sector, portraying itself as a nation determined to rise out of poverty.

He added that while the IMF continues to recommend export growth as a recovery strategy, it is also essential for the Sri Lankan government to demonstrate a practical roadmap for attracting investments and boosting exports.

“Investors will not come to a country where there is no hope or clear direction,” Karunanayake cautioned.
