Dr. Samitha Siritunga, a specialist in the Non-Communicable Diseases Unit of the Ministry of Health, warns that poor vehicle maintenance is a major contributor to the increasing number of road accidents in Sri Lanka.
He noted that economic challenges have made it difficult for many vehicle owners to carry out timely maintenance, posing serious safety risks.
“Vehicle issues not only cause accidents but also increase their severity,” Dr. Siritunga explained, highlighting that delayed services—such as replacing worn-out tires or fixing faulty brakes—can lead to dangerous situations.
He urged drivers to prioritize safety by addressing maintenance concerns promptly, emphasizing that proper upkeep and adherence to traffic rules could significantly reduce road accidents.
