Jaffna District Independent MP Ramanathan Archchuna was arrested this afternoon (29) by a special police team in Jaffna over allegations of obstructing police duties in Anuradhapura.
According to Police Media Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga, the MP is set to be produced before the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court.
The investigation stems from an incident on January 20, where Archchuna allegedly obstructed traffic police officers in the Rambewa area. The Anuradhapura Police presented facts before the court, and on January 22, the case was adjourned due to a discrepancy in identifying the correct suspect. The hearing is now scheduled for February 3.
Reports indicate that a heated altercation occurred when the MP, en route to a parliamentary session, was stopped by traffic police for allegedly driving with unauthorized ‘VIP lights’ and obstructing other vehicles.
