Japan Approves Major Visa Fee Increase Effective July 2026

June 22, 2026

The Japanese government has approved a significant increase in visa fees for foreign nationals, with the revised charges set to take effect from July 1, 2026.

Under the new fee structure, the cost of a single-entry visa will increase from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen, while the fee for a multiple-entry visa will rise from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen.

According to international media reports, this marks the first revision of Japan’s visa fees in nearly five decades, with the existing rates having remained unchanged since 1978.

Japanese authorities stated that the increase is intended to address the rising administrative and operational costs associated with visa processing, immigration management, and related consular services.

The revised fees will apply to travelers from countries that require visas to enter Japan. However, visitors from nations that currently enjoy visa-free access to Japan will not be affected by the changes unless they need to obtain a visa for specific purposes such as long-term stays, employment, study, or other special categories.

Officials noted that the updated fee structure is part of broader efforts to modernize immigration services and ensure the sustainability of visa processing systems amid increasing international travel demand.

The decision comes as Japan continues to attract growing numbers of tourists, students, skilled workers, and business travelers from around the world.

Travelers planning to visit Japan after July 1, 2026, are advised to check the latest visa requirements and applicable fees through Japanese diplomatic missions and official immigration channels before submitting their applications.
