King Charles’ U.S. Visit to Proceed Despite White House Shooting Incident

April 27, 2026

The planned state visit of King Charles III to the United States will go ahead as scheduled on Monday, Buckingham Palace confirmed, despite a recent shooting incident near the White House.

The incident occurred during a White House Correspondents’ Association dinner attended by U.S. President Donald Trump, when a gunman opened fire on security personnel, prompting Secret Service agents to escort the president to safety. No injuries were reported among Trump, his wife Melania Trump, or other guests.

U.S. authorities believe the shooting may have been aimed at the president and senior officials. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said he remains confident that adequate security measures are in place to ensure the safety of the visiting British monarch.

King Charles and Queen Camilla are expected to arrive for a four-day state visit, which will include a private meeting with President Trump and an address to Congress marking 250 years of U.S. independence.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said the visit will proceed following consultations between British and U.S. authorities, noting that the King and Queen are “looking forward to the visit.” A palace source added that minor adjustments may be made to some engagements.

The royal couple has also privately expressed their concern and sympathy to President Trump and the First Lady following the incident.

British minister Darren Jones stated that UK security services are continuing to coordinate closely with their U.S. counterparts to ensure the visit proceeds safely.

The visit is seen as an important step in strengthening U.S.-UK relations amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
