Legal Action to Be Taken Against Expressway Users Not Wearing Seat Belts

June 14, 2026

The National Council for Road Safety has announced that legal action will be taken against both drivers and passengers travelling on expressways without wearing seat belts.

Chairman of the Council, Manjula Kularatne, stated that the grace period granted to vehicle owners to install seat belts for rear-seat passengers will conclude on June 19.

According to Kularatne, authorities will intensify the enforcement of seat belt regulations following the expiry of the deadline.

He emphasized that both drivers and passengers are required to comply with the regulations, which are aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing the severity of injuries in the event of accidents.

The National Council for Road Safety has warned that strict legal action will be taken against individuals found violating the regulations after June 19.

Authorities noted that the measure forms part of broader efforts to strengthen road safety standards, promote responsible driving practices, and reduce road traffic fatalities and injuries across the country.

Motorists have been urged to ensure that their vehicles are equipped with the required safety features and that all occupants wear seat belts while travelling on expressways.
