National Film Corporation Launches Project to Build New Regional Cinemas

June 29, 2026

The National Film Corporation (NFC) has launched a major initiative to construct new regional cinemas across Sri Lanka, aiming to revitalize the local film industry and provide audiences with a modern cinema experience closer to their communities.

The project is being implemented in line with the government’s “Prosperous Country – Beautiful Life” national policy framework.

The inaugural discussion on the programme was recently held at the National Film Corporation under the patronage of its Chairman, Sudath Mahadivulwewa, with the participation of representatives from the private sector.

According to the NFC, the project will be carried out in partnership with private investors and will focus on expanding access to modern cinema facilities across the country.

The new cinemas will be equipped with the latest digital projection and sound technology and will feature seating capacities ranging from 50 to 100 seats, offering audiences a high-quality and comfortable viewing experience.

Several private sector companies have already entered into agreements with the National Film Corporation to construct new cinemas and upgrade existing theatre facilities.

Under the first phase of the project, new cinemas are planned for Gonavila, Pannala, Pitakotte, Narammala, and Nittambuwa.

Meanwhile, existing cinemas in Hatton, Monaragala, Embilipitiya, and Nugegoda will undergo comprehensive modernization with advanced digital technology and upgraded facilities.

The National Film Corporation also stated that discussions are underway with additional investors to expand the programme to several other regional towns in the future.

The meeting was attended by NFC General Manager Ruwan Premaweera, senior officials of the Corporation, and approximately 12 leading business representatives who have expressed interest in investing in Sri Lanka’s regional cinema sector.

The initiative is expected to strengthen the local film industry by expanding exhibition infrastructure, improving audience access to cinemas outside major cities, and encouraging greater private sector investment in the country’s entertainment sector.
