Nearly 400 Penalised for Violating Expressway Seat Belt Regulations

June 25, 2026

Authorities have initiated legal action against nearly 400 drivers and passengers who violated the mandatory seat belt regulations introduced for vehicles travelling on Sri Lanka’s expressways.

The Expressway Transport Safety Division stated that special inspection operations are being conducted at all expressway entry and exit points to ensure compliance with the new regulations.

Under the revised rules, which came into effect on June 20, all occupants of vehicles travelling on expressways are required to wear seat belts.

However, officials noted that a three-month grace period has been granted for vehicles that were not originally manufactured with seat belts. During this period, owners of such vehicles will be permitted to use expressways while making the necessary modifications to comply with the regulations.

Chairman of the National Road Safety Council, Manjula Kularatne, said the measure was introduced to enhance passenger safety and reduce the risk of serious injuries and fatalities in the event of accidents on expressways.

Authorities emphasized that enforcement operations will continue across the expressway network and urged all motorists and passengers to strictly comply with the mandatory seat belt requirement.

The National Road Safety Council reiterated that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve road safety standards and promote responsible driving practices throughout the country.
