New Electricity Tariff Revision Takes Effect From Today

May 11, 2026

The revised electricity tariff for the second and third quarters of 2026 will come into effect from today (11), according to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka.

The Commission had earlier approved an electricity tariff revision for the second quarter of 2026 with effect from April 1, under which tariffs were increased between 8% and 14.4%.

Subsequently, National System Operator Pvt Ltd submitted a revised cost estimate to the PUCSL on April 27, citing increased electricity generation costs due to rising fuel prices.

However, the government has agreed in writing to provide a Rs. 15 billion subsidy to reduce the impact on electricity consumers.

Accordingly, the latest tariff increase will not affect approximately 95% of electricity consumers in Sri Lanka.

The PUCSL stated that there will be no increase for domestic users consuming between 0 and 180 electricity units per month.

However, households exceeding 180 units will face higher charges based on their level of consumption.

According to the revised rates:

  • Consumers using 210 units will see their monthly bill rise from Rs. 9,570 to Rs. 11,330 — an increase of Rs. 1,760.
  • Consumers using 240 units will see their bill increase from Rs. 12,120 to Rs. 14,330 — an increase of Rs. 2,210.
  • Households consuming 270 units and 300 units will face increases of Rs. 2,660 and Rs. 3,110 respectively.
