No Global Deals Yet on Trump’s Tariffs – Sri Lanka Must Engage Strategically

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and MP Ravi Karunanayake stated that, to his knowledge, no country has entered into an agreement with the United States regarding the new tariffs introduced under the Trump administration.

Speaking at a media briefing, Karunanayake said the United States is currently focused on resolving trade issues with countries like China and Mexico.

He observed that while the U.S. once positioned itself as the “policeman” of the world, it is now operating more like a business entity under President Trump.

Given this shift, Karunanayake emphasized the importance of engaging with the U.S. with a clear understanding of its current policy direction.

He also stressed that any dealings with the United States must align with their established policies rather than attempt to bypass them.

Highlighting Trump’s background as a businessman, Karunanayake noted that he is well-versed in trade negotiations, and Sri Lanka should strategically seize this opportunity for mutual economic benefit.
