Over 160,000 Graduates Apply for Teacher Recruitment Examination

May 25, 2026

The Department of Examinations Sri Lanka says more than 160,000 graduates applied for the competitive examination conducted to recruit teachers for Sinhala, Tamil, and English medium vacancies in national and provincial schools.

The examination was held yesterday (24) at 1,048 examination centres across Sri Lanka.

According to the Department:

  • 66,991 applications were submitted by graduates already employed in the public service
  • 96,442 applications were received from other graduates

In total, more than 163,000 candidates applied for the examination.

The Department also stated that special examination arrangements were provided for 323 applicants with special needs.

Authorities noted that a similar competitive examination had originally been planned in 2023 for graduates serving in the public sector.

However, the examination was suspended following:

  • Three fundamental rights petitions filed before the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka
  • A separate case before the Court of Appeal of Sri Lanka

Following the completion of all legal proceedings, this year’s examination was conducted allowing both:

  • Graduates already in public service
  • Other graduates

to apply for recruitment.

The examination is part of broader efforts by education authorities to address the ongoing teacher shortage affecting schools across the island.
