The Department of Management Services has granted approval for the recruitment of graduates holding Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degrees into Sri Lanka’s teaching service, the Ministry of Education has announced.
According to the Ministry, the recruitment process for B.Ed. graduates will be conducted at the provincial council level and is expected to be completed before the end of this year.
Meanwhile, the Ministry stated that the results of the recently held limited and open competitive examinations for teacher recruitment are expected to be released in September.
Based on the examination results, a total of 23,006 candidates are expected to be recruited to the teaching service.
Of these, 15,000 teachers will be recruited through the limited competitive examination, while the remaining vacancies will be filled through the open competitive examination.
The Ministry further noted that appointment letters are expected to be issued before the end of the year.
In addition, approximately 6,500 diploma holders are scheduled to be recruited into the teaching service in December.
Accordingly, more than 31,000 new teachers are expected to join the education sector this year.
Despite these recruitment efforts, Sri Lanka continues to face a significant shortage of teachers, with current estimates indicating around 44,000 vacancies across schools nationwide.
Education authorities say the large-scale recruitment drive is aimed at addressing staff shortages, improving educational standards, and ensuring adequate teacher coverage in schools throughout the country.
