Harini Amarasuriya has instructed officials to focus on the practical needs of the public when implementing development projects in Colombo District.
The Prime Minister made these remarks during the Colombo District Planning Committee meeting held yesterday (12) at the Colombo District Secretariat to review the progress of ongoing and planned development projects.
During the meeting, attention was given to projects scheduled for implementation in 2026 and 2027, with particular focus on:
- Rural road development
- Poverty alleviation initiatives
- Upgrading infrastructure facilities
Officials stated that more than Rs. 195 million has been allocated for 2026 under the decentralized budget programme.
Accordingly:
- 240 project proposals have already been received through Divisional Secretaries
- Approval has been granted for 126 projects valued at Rs. 127 million
A further Rs. 100 million has been allocated to improve road safety in the district, including the installation of safety barriers and road signboards at high-risk locations.
Authorities also revealed plans to:
- Construct rural bridges with an allocation of Rs. 100 million
- Develop 50 kilometers of roads by 2027
Meanwhile, Rs. 1,036 million has been allocated for the Praja Shakthi initiative aimed at poverty eradication.
Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya instructed officials to complete all projects under the programme by November 30, 2026.
The meeting also included discussions on developing school playgrounds with assistance from the Ministry of Sports Sri Lanka, as well as implementing special projects under the Ministries of Buddhasasana and Environment.
