Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya emphasized the necessity of changing people’s attitudes for social transformation, noting that such a shift cannot be achieved overnight.
Responding to a question posed by MP Asitha Niroshana in Parliament today (08) about overcoming the challenges of transforming the education and media sectors, the Prime Minister explained that the citizens voted for the government to bring about deep, structural changes in the country, rather than simply replacing individuals in power.
She further emphasized the importance of public involvement in the transformation process, stating that the government is prepared to face these challenges head-on.
“The people of our country have given us a mandate for profound transformation. This is not just about changing individuals, but about a deeper societal shift at every level. Such a transformation will inevitably face resistance, and we must acknowledge this reality,” the Prime Minister remarked.
“We will never allow our program to be dictated by those who oppose this transformation. We represent the people and respect the mandate given to us. As a government, we are ready to tackle these challenges through our programs,” she added.
The Prime Minister continued, “We firmly believe that this transformation cannot solely rely on political authority; it must involve public participation. This change requires an ethical approach, as it is not merely an institutional shift, but a social one.”
She concluded by stating that for the transformation to be successful, it must result in a change in the people themselves. This includes how individuals interact with one another. “This is not a change that can happen in a single day, but rather a gradual process,” she concluded.
