Private Bus Owners Raise Concerns Over Government’s Metro Bus Project

June 23, 2026

The Lanka Private Bus Owners Association has expressed serious concerns over the government’s newly introduced Metro Bus project, claiming that it could place an additional financial burden on taxpayers.

Speaking to the media, Association Chairman Gemunu Wijeratne alleged that the Metro buses currently in operation are being operated outside the established legal framework and questioned the rationale behind importing and deploying such buses under the present economic circumstances.

Wijeratne argued that the project is unlikely to achieve its stated objective of encouraging private vehicle users to shift to public transport. He further claimed that the initiative has been presented to the public in a misleading manner.

The Association Chairman also pointed out that the Metro buses consume more diesel than conventional buses, raising concerns about their operational efficiency and long-term financial sustainability.

He warned that any losses incurred through the project would ultimately have to be borne by the public through government expenditure and taxpayer funds.

Wijeratne further stressed the need for greater transparency regarding the project’s operational costs, funding mechanisms, and long-term viability, adding that public resources should be utilized carefully and efficiently.

The remarks were made as part of a broader criticism of the government’s public transport policies and investment decisions.

However, neither the government nor the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has issued an official response to the allegations raised by the Private Bus Owners Association.

The Metro Bus project was introduced with the objective of improving public transportation services and enhancing passenger convenience, though discussions regarding its effectiveness and financial implications continue among stakeholders in the transport sector.
