Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party, MP Ravi Karunanayake, has commented on the controversy surrounding the government’s alleged coal-related dealings, saying that surviving a no-confidence motion alone would not resolve the underlying issues.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake said political victory does not necessarily mean that broader governance concerns have been addressed.
Referring to an English saying, he remarked that even if an “operation” is considered successful, the “patient” may still remain in a critical condition, suggesting that deeper structural issues remain unresolved.
The MP also referred to statements made by Anura Kumara Dissanayake regarding public relief measures, noting that while the promises sounded positive, the key challenge would be their implementation.
“We are waiting to see how what has been said will be implemented in practice,” he stated.
Karunanayake’s remarks come amid continued debate over energy policy, public costs, and accountability in government procurement decisions.
