Ravi Karunanayake says Sri Lanka needs a Central Bank of Sri Lanka that supports economic development and entrepreneurship rather than focusing solely on controlling inflation.
Speaking to the media, the former United National Party Deputy Leader stated that the country should prioritize creating opportunities for young people and expanding economic growth.
According to Karunanayake:
“We want to make the youth of this country entrepreneurs. We want a government that can connect this country to the world.”
He further argued that:
- Excessive focus on inflation control alone could damage the broader economy
- Sri Lanka should avoid becoming economically isolated
- Greater emphasis should be placed on development and productive economic activity
The MP stated:
“We cannot allow this country’s economy to be destroyed by controlling inflation.”
Comments on Possible Public Unrest
When asked by journalists whether another public uprising or protest movement could emerge in the country, Karunanayake said he hoped such a situation would not arise again.
According to him:
- The country has already experienced enough instability
- Leaders should listen to public concerns
- Governments should avoid misleading citizens with false promises
He also emphasized the importance of:
- Giving opportunities to capable and talented individuals
- Encouraging practical leadership and governance
Comments on Protest Actions
Journalists also questioned the MP regarding reports of university student protesters attempting to seize a property allegedly linked to Basil Rajapaksa.
Karunanayake responded that:
- Authorities had already announced that the property had been legally taken over by the government
- Any separate attempt by protesters to occupy the property could become unlawful
He added:
“This should be a system change, not system maintenance.”
The MP stressed that the country requires:
- A broader change in political attitudes and governance culture
Response on Joining the Government
Asked whether he had received an invitation to join the current administration, Karunanayake stated that the country’s priority should not be recruiting individuals into governments, but rather:
- Bringing together talented and capable people to work for national progress.
