Ravi Karunanayake Stresses Need for Respectful UNP-SJB Unity

United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader Ravi Karunanayake has ruled out the possibility of forging an agreement between the UNP and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) through intermediaries, emphasizing that unity must be built on mutual respect.

Speaking at a media briefing, Karunanayake underscored the importance of collaboration driven by genuine commitment rather than external influences.

“We must work together with sincerity. Ranil Wickremesinghe has a broad vision and works accordingly, but those around him are obstructing his efforts. I spoke to Ranil—certain individuals close to him are weakening the party. Our unity should be based on respect. Let’s rebuild the country after 77 years with the right mindset. The SJB cannot be united with the UNP through brokers, but I will ensure it happens,” he asserted.

Commenting on the upcoming Colombo Municipal Council elections, Karunanayake expressed confidence in victory and reiterated his stance on unity.

“This time too, the outcome will be the same—we will win. We will do it together. The UNP is engaging with the SJB in this effort. I also have a concern—I am the most senior member of the UNP after Ranil Wickremesinghe. The UNP and SJB must come together respectfully, along with other parties. That is what the people expect,” he stated.
