The Department of Meteorology has issued a ‘Red’ warning for heavy rains in the Eastern, Uva, and North-Central provinces, as well as in the Hambantota, Mannar, and Vavuniya districts, effective today (January 19).
The active Northeast Monsoon is expected to maintain the prevailing showery conditions across the island for the next 24 hours, the department stated.
Very heavy rainfall of approximately 150 mm is anticipated in some areas of the Eastern, Uva, Northern, and North-Central provinces, along with the Hambantota District. Additionally, fairly heavy showers of about 75 mm may occur in other parts of the country.
The general public is advised to take precautions to minimize damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
