Restaurant Owners Say Fuel Price Hike Will Not Lead to Food Price Increase

May 4, 2026

The All Ceylon Restaurant Owners Association says food prices will not be increased despite the recent fuel price revision.

Association Chairman Harshana Rukshan stated that the latest fuel price increase—ranging between Rs. 12 and Rs. 15—is too minor to justify raising food prices.

He urged restaurant owners not to increase prices unnecessarily and called on the Consumer Affairs Authority Sri Lanka to take action against establishments charging excessive rates.

However, Rukshan noted that if gas prices rise in the future, discussions may be needed to reassess food pricing.

He also highlighted that the prices of several food items have declined in recent months. According to him, the price of an egg has dropped from around Rs. 42 to approximately Rs. 26, while chicken prices have decreased from about Rs. 1,450 per kilogram to between Rs. 1,250 and Rs. 1,350.

Rukshan said that under current market conditions there is no reasonable basis for increasing food prices.

He also recalled that the prices of fried rice and kottu were increased by Rs. 30 from March 31 following the electricity tariff hike implemented on April 1, while plain tea and milk tea prices were raised by Rs. 5 last month.
