The Working Committee of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has approved a proposal to engage in discussions for potential collaboration with the United National Party (UNP).
A five-member committee, led by SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara, has been appointed to spearhead these talks.
Following the Working Committee meeting on Thursday (16), SJB leader and Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa emphasized the party’s commitment to opposing government repression and strategizing for the upcoming Local Government (LG) Elections. Premadasa also stated that the SJB is prepared for the elections and plans to collaborate with other opposition parties.
Gampaha District SJB MP Harshana Rajakaruna expressed support for the discussions, suggesting that the SJB is open to working with the UNP, provided former President Ranil Wickremesinghe cedes leadership to Sajith Premadasa.
Rajakaruna also called on all right-wing political forces to unite under the SJB banner, signaling a broader effort to strengthen opposition unity ahead of the LG polls.
The discussions are expected to commence after the return of the UNP leader to Sri Lanka, highlighting the evolving political landscape as parties gear up for the elections.
