A group of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) organizers has called on former President Maithripala Sirisena to lead the party’s unification efforts. Reports indicate that the organizers have made this request on two separate occasions, urging Sirisena to either accept the chairmanship of the party or, if he is unwilling, to support the initiative without formally taking the role.
In addition, ‘Api Sri Lanka’, an organization affiliated with the SLFP, has formally requested Sirisena’s involvement in guiding the party toward unity.
However, former President Sirisena has yet to respond directly to these calls, stating that he will give the matter consideration after the upcoming Local Government elections.
The SLFP is currently grappling with multiple internal crises, which have been further complicated by ongoing legal disputes involving key party figures. Although former Presidents Sirisena and Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga have withdrawn from the legal proceedings, several cases involving party members—Duminda Dissanayake, Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, and Dayasiri Jayasekara—are still active.
Despite these challenges, the SLFP has announced its intention to contest the upcoming Local Government elections under the ‘chair’ symbol. Political sources suggest that a reorganization of the party is expected to follow the elections.
