The Department of Irrigation Sri Lanka says spill gates of the Deduru Oya Reservoir, Lunugamvehera Reservoir, and Rajanganaya Reservoir were opened from this morning (09) due to prevailing adverse weather conditions.
According to the Department, four spill gates of the Deduru Oya Reservoir have been opened by three feet each, releasing approximately 8,400 cubic feet of water per second into the Deduru Oya.
At the Lunugamvehera Reservoir, six spill gates have been opened. Two gates were raised by four feet each, while the remaining four were opened by eight feet each, releasing around 2,915 cubic feet of water per second.
Authorities have advised residents and water users along the banks of the Kirindi Oya to remain vigilant due to the increased water release.
Meanwhile, six sluice gates of the Rajanganaya Reservoir have also been opened. Four gates were raised by two feet each, while the remaining two were opened by three feet each, releasing approximately 4,542 cubic feet of water per second.
The Department urged the public living in low-lying areas near rivers and reservoirs to exercise caution amid the ongoing heavy rainfall across the island.
