Sri Lanka Moves Toward Fully Digital Vehicle Insurance System

May 26, 2026

Dinusha Thilanka says Sri Lanka plans to gradually digitize all documents related to the insurance sector under the ongoing vehicle insurance digitization initiative.

He made these remarks during a special media briefing held at the Department of Government Information Sri Lanka to educate the public about the new digital vehicle insurance card system.

According to Thilanka, physical vehicle insurance cards currently issued by insurance companies will eventually be completely discontinued.

Instead, customers will receive:

  • Digital insurance cards
  • Mobile-accessible insurance verification services
  • QR code-based insurance authentication

Drivers will be able to access their digital insurance details through:

  • Mobile phones
  • Official websites
  • QR codes

The Chairman stated that the authenticity of digital insurance cards can be verified at any time through the dedicated hotline number 1338.
