The Sri Lankan-born population in Australia has continued to grow steadily, reaching an estimated 184,800 by mid-2025, according to the latest figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
The new estimate marks a significant increase from 172,800 recorded in June 2024 and 158,300 in June 2023, reflecting continued post-pandemic migration trends.
According to the data, Sri Lanka now ranks among the top 10 overseas-born populations in Australia, remaining slightly ahead of the Malaysia-born community and several other migrant groups.
The Sri Lankan-born population has expanded considerably over the past decade, rising from just over 110,000 in 2013 to nearly 185,000 in 2025.
The figures also show that residents born in India currently make up the largest overseas-born population in Australia, followed by those born in United Kingdom.
The latest statistics highlight the growing presence and contribution of the Sri Lankan community within Australia’s multicultural population.
