Sri Lanka’s Official Reserves Fall Below USD 7 Billion Again

May 11, 2026

Central Bank of Sri Lanka says Sri Lanka’s official reserve assets declined by USD 267 million in April 2026.

According to CBSL data, official reserve assets fell to USD 6.759 billion in April from USD 7.026 billion recorded in March.

As a result, Sri Lanka’s reserves have once again dropped below the USD 7 billion mark after remaining above that threshold for two months.

The country’s reserves had surpassed USD 7 billion in February 2026 for the first time since August 2020.

However, the Central Bank noted that the reserve figures include proceeds received under the currency swap arrangement with the People’s Bank of China.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s foreign currency reserves also declined to USD 6.505 billion in April from USD 6.8 billion in March, according to the CBSL.

The Central Bank further stated that the Sri Lankan Rupee has depreciated by 3.6% against the U.S. dollar so far this year.
