Supreme Court Dismisses Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Petition on Security Reduction

The Supreme Court today dismissed a fundamental rights petition filed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, challenging the government’s decision to reduce his security detail to 60 personnel without a proper evaluation.

The petition, filed on January 24, claimed that the security reduction violated Rajapaksa’s fundamental rights and left him vulnerable to potential threats. His legal team, led by President’s Counsel Ali Sabry, argued that such decisions should be based on a formal security assessment.

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Cabinet members were named as respondents in the case. The petition alleged that Rajapaksa’s security team no longer included armed forces personnel, with only police officers assigned for his protection.

Despite these concerns, the Supreme Court dismissed the petition without taking it up for hearing.
