The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) says the total value of foreign remittances received from Sri Lankan migrant workers in May 2026 reached US$847 million.
According to CBSL data, the figure represents a significant increase compared to the US$641.7 million recorded during the same month in 2025, reflecting a year-on-year increase of approximately US$205.3 million.
The latest figures also show that cumulative worker remittances received between January and May 2026 amounted to US$3.90 billion.
This marks a notable 26 percent increase compared to the corresponding period last year, highlighting the continued growth of foreign employment earnings.
Authorities note that worker remittances remain one of Sri Lanka’s key sources of foreign exchange inflows, playing an important role in supporting external sector stability, strengthening reserves, and easing pressure on the country’s balance of payments.
The increase comes amid broader efforts to boost foreign exchange earnings through exports, tourism, and overseas employment while maintaining economic recovery momentum.
