World’s Oldest Person, Tomiko Itooka, Passes Away at 116

Tomiko Itooka, who was recognized by Britain’s Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest person in September 2024, has passed away in western Japan at the age of 116.

She died of natural causes at 9:03 p.m. on Sunday in a nursing home for the elderly in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, as confirmed by officials from Japan’s health ministry and local authorities.

Itooka became the world’s oldest person following the passing of Spain’s Maria Branyas Morera in August 2024, at the age of 117.
