The United National Party (UNP) has revealed that Japan’s Waseda University has confirmed that Speaker Ashoka Ranwala has never been a student there, calling the display of a fake doctorate an insult to Sri Lanka’s Parliament.
In a press conference, former Member of Parliament Thalatha Athukorala condemned the actions, emphasizing that Sri Lanka’s Parliament is the first in Asia and is under close scrutiny by the global community.
Athukorala stated that the accusations regarding the Speaker’s alleged doctorate tarnish the nation’s image.
She further stressed that Speaker Ranwala should immediately resign from his position, expressing that the claims surrounding his academic qualifications are a matter of national importance.
Athukorala pointed out that during the election, the National People’s Power (NPP) distributed leaflets claiming that the current Speaker had completed a postgraduate course at Waseda University.
According to her, this misinformation has deceived voters in the Gampaha district and the entire country.
The former MP also raised concerns about the educational qualifications of other NPP members, revealing that they are receiving reports of fake academic credentials being submitted by another MP.
