Police Launch Island-Wide Traffic Operation to Curb Road Accidents During Festive Season

In response to the alarming rise in accidents involving passenger transport buses and other vehicles, the Sri Lanka Police has announced a nationwide traffic operation starting December 23, 2024.

Spearheaded by the Acting Inspector General of Police, this initiative aims to enhance road safety throughout the festive season. The operation will particularly focus on public passenger transport buses, with police officers inspecting drivers for signs of alcohol or drug use. Additionally, buses will be checked for reckless driving, speeding, traffic violations, and mechanical issues such as unsafe tires.

The Police Media Division stated that stringent action would be taken against violators to ensure public safety. The operation extends beyond public transport, encompassing private vehicles to monitor compliance with traffic regulations.

Traffic officers will be deployed island-wide, working around the clock to enforce the initiative. The police emphasized that the campaign aims to promote safer public transport usage while protecting drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.

The public has been encouraged to participate actively by reporting reckless driving or unsafe vehicles via emergency hotlines 119 and 1997. Videos and photos of traffic violations can also be sent via WhatsApp to divisional Traffic Officers in Charge. Verified reports will prompt immediate legal action against offenders.
