The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has announced the launch of an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) registration system to prevent the use of unregistered mobile devices within the country.
The system, set to go live on January 29, 2025, mandates the registration of all mobile phones and SIM-enabled devices to ensure their compatibility with local telecommunication networks.
Key Details of the New Regulation
- Registration Requirement:
All mobile phones, tablet computers, dongles, and other SIM-enabled devices must be registered with the TRCSL to function on local networks. - Approved Vendors Only:
Consumers are urged to buy devices only from vendors holding a valid TRCSL Vendor Licence and ensure the device has a TRCSL-approved IMEI number. - Importing Devices:
SIM-enabled devices brought into the country must undergo registration through a new clearance system, requiring approvals from authorities such as Sri Lanka Customs, the Department of Import and Export Control, and the Ministry of Defense. - Non-Compliance Consequences:
Devices that are not registered by January 29, 2025, will be barred from accessing telecommunication networks in Sri Lanka. - Exemptions:
Devices already connected to local networks before January 28, 2025, will remain unaffected.
How to Verify Your Device’s IMEI
To confirm compliance:
- Send an SMS to 1909 with the format: IMEI <space> <15-digit IMEI number>.
This initiative aims to enhance national security, prevent unauthorized device usage, and ensure a regulated mobile environment in Sri Lanka.
