The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has warned traders that they must maintain proper documents or invoices verifying the source of goods held for sale, storage or distribution.
The requirement has been in effect since April 27, 2022, under CAA Order No. 83, and applies to manufacturers, warehouse operators, suppliers, distributors and all traders.
According to the CAA, invoices must include essential details such as the supplier’s name and address, date of purchase, purchase price, type and quantity of goods, and the batch number where applicable.
The Authority warned that businesses could face legal consequences if they are unable to establish the source of goods in their possession, particularly imported goods, where proper documentation is important for tracing the supply chain.
During market inspections and raids, CAA officials will check whether traders maintain the required records. Goods found to be in violation may be seized and produced before court, with legal action taken against those responsible.
The CAA said the enforcement measures are intended to protect legitimate businesses that maintain proper records and prevent undocumented and untraceable goods from entering the market.
