On 10th January 2025, Port City Colombo marked a historic milestone with the groundbreaking of its Marina Development, a venture poised to transform Sri Lanka into a hub for luxury tourism and maritime excellence.
The ceremony was attended by Hon. Vijitha Herath, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment & Tourism, as Chief Guest. Distinguished guests included H.E. Qi Zhenhong, Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka; Mr. Harsha Amarasekera, Chairman of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission; and key representatives from Browns Investments PLC (BI) and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC)—the joint developers of this groundbreaking project.
Transforming Sri Lanka’s Luxury Tourism Landscape
The Marina Development, spanning 33,776 sqm, is set to redefine luxury tourism in South Asia. Offering berthing space for up to 200 mid-to-large-sized vessels, it fills a critical infrastructure gap in the region. The project also includes sunset bars, seaside restaurants, retail outlets, and entertainment spaces, creating a vibrant, world-class destination for global travelers.
Mr. Ishara Nanayakkara, Chairman of Brown and Company PLC, highlighted the transformative potential of the Marina, stating:
“The Marina Development represents a unique opportunity to redefine the luxury tourism landscape in South Asia. Positioned at the crossroads of international maritime routes, this project will elevate Sri Lanka’s appeal as a premium travel destination and symbolise the island’s resilience and ambition.”
Investment and Strategic Significance
With a total investment of USD 120 million, the Marina is slated for completion by 2027. It is a key component of Sri Lanka’s tourism strategy, aiming to attract 3 million tourists and generate USD 5 billion in revenue by 2025. The project will also contribute to economic growth by creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs and attracting foreign investment.
Mr. Kapila Jayawardena, Group Managing Director/CEO of LOLC Holdings PLC, remarked:
“This project underscores Sri Lanka’s potential to lead in luxury tourism while stimulating significant economic activity and positioning Colombo as a hub for maritime excellence.”
Strengthening Regional Connectivity
Strategically located along major maritime routes between the Red Sea, the Maldives, and the Far East, Sri Lanka offers year-round favorable climate conditions, making it an ideal stopover for yachts. The Marina will also cater to the growing number of high-net-worth individuals in India, tapping into a lucrative, underserved market for luxury maritime services.
Mr. Harsha Amarasekera, Chairman of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission, emphasized the Marina’s role in positioning Sri Lanka as a luxury yachting destination:
“This project will attract high-net-worth individuals, foster economic growth, and establish Colombo Port City as a regional business hub. It represents a pivotal step toward transforming Sri Lanka’s maritime tourism industry.”
A Vision for the Future
The Marina Development is not just about luxury tourism; it symbolizes Sri Lanka’s ambition to rise as a global contender in tourism and maritime industries. With the support of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission, the project is set to drive the nation’s economic progress while showcasing Sri Lanka’s natural beauty, strategic location, and hospitality to the world.
