The Commissioner General of Examinations, Amith Jayasundara, announced that the group of female teachers involved in a dress code dispute will resume their duties tomorrow (18) at the Department of Examinations premises. The teachers were engaged in evaluating answer sheets for the 2024 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination at the Pannipitiya Dharmapala Vidyalaya evaluation centre before the dispute arose.
The conflict emerged on January 16, a school day, when the female principal reportedly refused entry to the teachers for wearing gowns instead of sarees, which she deemed inappropriate for the school environment. The teachers argued that the evaluation centre, operating under the authority of the Commissioner General of Examinations, was not subject to the school principal’s jurisdiction regarding attire.
The disagreement escalated, leading to a confrontation. Police were called to mediate, but no resolution was reached, prompting the Commissioner General to temporarily close the evaluation centre.
To address the situation, the Examinations Department has arranged for the teachers involved to continue their work at its own premises, while other evaluation officers will proceed with their duties at the Pannipitiya Dharmapala Vidyalaya centre.
