A petition has been submitted to the Court of Appeal seeking to invalidate the parliamentary seat of Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Ananda Wijepala.
The petition was filed by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Administrative Secretary Renuka Perera, naming Minister Wijepala, the Secretary General of Parliament, and the Attorney General as respondents.
According to the petitioner, Wijepala was appointed as Minister of Public Security on November 18 and was also confirmed as the President’s Chief of Staff under the Right to Information Act. The petition argues that holding both positions violates Article 91 of the Constitution, which disqualifies individuals engaged in public service from sitting or voting in Parliament.
The petitioner requests the court to declare Wijepala ineligible to hold a parliamentary seat and to annul his appointment. Additionally, an interim injunction is sought to prevent him from acting as Minister, attending Parliament, or voting until a final ruling is issued.
