Former UNP Deputy Leader MP Ravi Karunanayake has questioned why there is resistance to renewable energy when fuel-based electricity generation costs Rs. 70 per unit, while renewable sources offer a significantly lower production cost.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake warned that discouraging renewable energy could lead to its withdrawal from the national grid, weakening the sector.
He urged the government to make a decisive choice: continue producing costly electricity using fuel or strengthen and expand the renewable energy sector for a more sustainable future.
Karunanayake also alleged that certain factions within the Ceylon Electricity Board are actively working against renewable energy projects.
