Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Renuka Jayasundara has revealed concerning statistics on sexual harassment and domestic violence in Sri Lanka, highlighting that rape remains the most reported crime.
Speaking in Colombo, DIG Jayasundara stated that 2,252 cases of sexual harassment against women were reported in 2023, with most incidents occurring in homes (1,420 cases), followed by public transport (261), online platforms (192), roads (117), workplaces (41), schools (20), religious places (9), and other locations (192).
She stressed that underreporting likely masks the full extent of the issue. Additionally, domestic violence remains a serious concern, with 130,000 complaints filed annually.
DIG Jayasundara reaffirmed the police’s commitment to investigating these crimes and supporting victims.
