Indian PM Narendra Modi Arrives in Sri Lanka for Landmark Three-Day State Visit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka today (April 4) for a three-day state visit, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between the two neighbouring countries.

The visit comes at the invitation of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and will see Prime Minister Modi accompanied by India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar. The official welcome ceremony is set to take place tomorrow (April 5) at Independence Square in Colombo.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will participate in high-level bilateral discussions aimed at further strengthening the relationship between Sri Lanka and India. Several key agreements are expected to be signed, covering areas such as energy, digital transformation, security cooperation, and healthcare development.

A major highlight of the visit will be the inauguration of the Sampur Solar Power Plant project — a collaborative venture between the two nations designed to enhance Sri Lanka’s renewable energy capacity.

As part of his itinerary, Prime Minister Modi is also expected to pay homage to the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura, underscoring the cultural and religious ties between the countries.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s security forces have rolled out a comprehensive security plan to ensure the safety of the high-level delegation. According to Police Media Spokesperson SSP Buddhika Manathunga, the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway and Baseline Road will be temporarily closed at intervals between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. today.
