A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coasts of Chile and Argentina on Friday, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
In response to the earthquake, Chilean authorities issued an evacuation alert for the entire coastal section of the Strait of Magellan, located in the far south of the country.
US authorities have warned that the coast of Chile is at risk of “hazardous” tsunami waves following the earthquake, which occurred near the south of Argentina. The U.S. Tsunami Warning Centres have indicated that tsunami waves could be possible within 300 kilometers of the earthquake’s epicenter, located in the Drake Passage.
Chile’s disaster agency has instructed residents in the coastal region of Magallanes to evacuate. They have urged the public to remain calm and follow the instructions of authorities and response teams. The agency also reminded people to consider the needs of their pets during evacuation.
