UGC Summons Vice Chancellors Amid Rising Concerns Over University Ragging

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has summoned vice chancellors from all state universities across Sri Lanka for a high-level meeting, UGC Chairman Professor Kapila Senavirathne confirmed.

The urgent meeting is expected to address several critical issues, most notably the persistent problem of ragging (hazing), which has once again come under public scrutiny following a series of disturbing incidents.

In a related development, four students from the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL) are scheduled to be produced before the Balangoda Magistrate’s Court today. They were arrested on Sunday (May 4) by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over alleged involvement in ragging.

According to police reports, the suspects are third-year students from the Faculty of Technology at SUSL. Their arrests follow an investigation initiated after a complaint was filed with the Samanalawewa Police on April 29.

Meanwhile, multiple investigations are ongoing into the recent death of a second-year student from the same faculty, further intensifying concerns over the safety and well-being of university students.
