Dengue Threat Intensifies: 38 MOH Areas Declared High-Risk, Special Eradication Program Launched

The National Dengue Control Unit has identified 38 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas as high-risk zones for dengue fever transmission.

According to Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, Director of the Unit, over 2,200 dengue cases have been reported in May alone, with 47% of these cases originating from the Western Province.

So far this year, approximately 20,000 cases have been recorded across the island.

Dr. Samaraweera also warned of a rise in both dengue and chikungunya infections, both of which are spread by the same mosquito vector.

In response to the escalating threat, a special dengue eradication program will be carried out from May 19 to 24. The campaign will focus on eliminating mosquito breeding grounds in 15 districts, aiming to control the vector population and curb the spread of these diseases.

Health authorities urge the public to cooperate with local officials during this operation and to take all necessary precautions to prevent mosquito breeding in and around their homes.
