An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Indonesia’s eastern Maluku province on Thursday morning (15), according to the country’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
The tremor occurred at 7:50 a.m. Jakarta time, with the epicenter located 189 kilometers southwest of Maluku Barat Daya Regency at a depth of 515 kilometers beneath the seabed.
The shaking was felt at an intensity of III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in Tiakur, the capital of the regency.
Authorities confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued, as the earthquake was not expected to trigger significant sea waves.
Indonesia, an archipelago situated along the seismically active Pacific “Ring of Fire,” frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic activity.
