The Department of Meteorology has issued a ‘Red’ warning for strong winds and rough seas affecting several coastal regions of Sri Lanka.
According to the advisory, sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, are expected to be very rough at times due to the active southwest monsoon. Wind gusts in these areas could reach speeds of 60–70 kmph.
Naval and fishing communities are strongly advised not to venture into these sea areas until further notice.
Additionally, wind speeds may increase up to 50–60 kmph in sea areas off the coast from Chilaw to Galle via Colombo, and from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaittivu. Those engaged in fishing and naval activities in these areas are urged to exercise extreme caution.
The advisory also warns that wave heights may rise up to 3.0 meters in sea areas off the coast from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota. There is also a possibility of coastal surges caused by swell waves in these regions.
Naval and fishing communities are requested to stay alert and pay close attention to future updates issued by the Department of Meteorology.
