The Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation has announced that the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) will begin transitioning to a fully digitized system, as part of a sweeping reform initiative aimed at curbing corruption and enhancing service delivery.
State Minister Ruwan Kodithuwakku stated that digitization is the only sustainable solution to address longstanding issues of fraud and inefficiency within the Department.
In the first phase of the project, processes related to vehicle registration and the issuance of driving licenses will be moved online.
To further ease the burden on the public, plans are also underway to reduce congestion at the Department’s heavily crowded offices in Narahenpita and Werahera.
A key component of the initiative involves connecting all 25 district offices to the main system, enabling citizens to access essential services through their local branches instead of traveling to Colombo.
State Minister Kodithuwakku emphasized that the digital overhaul is expected to enhance convenience for the public while significantly improving efficiency and transparency within the Department.
