Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP) and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake emphasized that engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) must be approached with a clear understanding and strategic purpose.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake stated that Sri Lanka should not merely seek IMF support, but must also act prudently and take the right steps to implement reforms.
“It’s not just about asking for help. We must engage with the IMF with the right understanding and act at the right time,” he said.
He further pointed out that it is the government’s responsibility to boost exports, particularly by aligning policies with IMF recommendations, as export growth is essential for long-term economic stability.
Karunanayake also noted that Sri Lanka is expected to begin repaying its external creditors from 2028, making it critical to strengthen export capacity well in advance.
He urged the government to formally request the IMF’s assistance in enhancing export performance, as part of a broader strategy to ensure debt sustainability and economic resilience.
