Nearly 200 Police Officers Have Died on Duty, IGP Says

October 11, 2026

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya has stated that the Sri Lanka Police records the highest number of officers dying while on duty compared to other services in the country.

He made the remarks while attending an event in the Biyagama area, noting that several special programmes are being implemented to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the police service.

“We need a group of disciplined, efficient and strong officers. When considering the number of police personnel, a significant number fall ill or are involved in road accidents on a daily basis. Even today, two police officers have been involved in road accidents,” he said.

The IGP added that nearly 200 police officers had lost their lives while on duty, noting that authorities were taking steps to reduce the risks faced by officers.

He also said basic medical kits had been provided to every police station, while arrangements were underway to supply physical fitness equipment at station level.
